As February approaches, so does Black History Month, a time to recognize and honor the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans throughout history. This annual observance provides an opportunity to highlight the strength, resilience, and beauty of the black community and to educate oneself on the struggles and triumphs of black individuals in shaping our society.
In this blog post, we’ll take a deep dive into the significance of Black History Month and discuss some of the most iconic African American figures who have made a lasting impact on our world.
The History of Black History Month
Black History Month was first established in 1926 by historian and journalist, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, as “Negro History Week.” This was an extension of his mission to inform the public about the overlooked contributions of African Americans in shaping American history. Why February? This month was chosen because it coincides with the birthdays of two prominent figures in black history, President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
